We just tested it. It first reduces the space around the title, and when
that doesn't suffice it just trunctates.

You can use screen. Very powefull, allows you to switch between the
different windows easily, can notify you of output in any of the
windows, and in the newest version can also show two of them at the same
time splitted horizontally (like splitvt).

Screen also allows you to 'detach', i.e. logout but keep all the windows
running. When you re-attach everything is as before.
