This does indeed appear to be the problem.  When I switch on
the num lock, input gets through.  At the same time, the wmx
functions on the left-Windows-key stop working -- something
which used to happen, but was never a problem in recent 6preN
releases.

Why exactly the num lock should prevent ordinary keystrokes
from getting through and not prevent ctrl-D from exiting xterm,
I really have no idea.
