[Harald Joerg] [Finbarr OConnell] Google SRE

Harald Joerg - Sat Dec 11 16:54:22 2010

Hello Mongers,

I'm writing this in English not because English apparently is the
dominant language on our list, but because the forwarded message is in
English :-)

I don't know why the HTML part of this message contains three
signatures, but I think the list software will strip the HTML part
anyway :-)

--- Begin Message --- Hi

I came across your details on the Perl Mongers website, I hope you don't mind me contacting you.
If not interested I would appreciate it if you could send my details to any friends that might be interested?

Would you be interested in working for Google in any of the following locations, Dublin, London, Munich or Zurich?

We currently have openings for Site Reliability Engineers. SRE's as they are commonly know are both software engineers (SWEs) and systems administrators (SAs), responsible for Google's production services from end-to-end. These are the individuals who "own" Google services like Search, Gmail, Ads, as well as internal services. SREs write software and interact with applications, service infrastructure, and platforms to ensure we have reliable and available services which scale to Google production size. They participate in software design, capacity planning, performance analysis, and incident response focused on automation and software engineering to prevent problem recurrence.

If interested please
complete the skills assessment below as accurately as possible and return it to me.

Self Evaluation Guide:

10 - Wrote the book on it (there must be a book)
9 - Could have written the book, but didn't.
8 - Deep understanding of corner cases and esoteric features.
7 - Understanding and (appropriate) usage of most lesser known features.
6 - Can develop large programs and deploy new systems from scratch.
5 - Can develop/deploy larger programs/systems using all basic (w/o book) and more esoteric features (some w/ book, some without)
4 - Can develop/deploy medium programs/systems using all basic (w/o book) and a few esoteric features (w/ book). Understands enough about internals to do nontrivial troubleshooting.
3 - Can utilize basic features without much help, manage a small installation competently.
2 - can write hello world without looking at a book, kind of figure out how a system works, if necessary.
1 - Can read programs, make small changes to existing programs, or make adjustments to already installed systems, w/book handy.
 0 - No experience.

TCP/IP  Networking (OSI stack, DNS, etc.)(  )
Unix/Linux System Administration tasks(  )
Unix/Linux internals(  )
Algorithms & Data Structures(  )
SQL and / or Database administration(  )
C(  )
C++(  )
Java(  )
Perl(  )
Shell Scripting (sh, bash, ksk, csh)(  )
Python(  )

Scripting language of your choice, not already mentioned: ______________ (  )

Which of these best reflects your spoken and written English skills?

Basic - understand some phrases/words, but not able to answer detailed questions in an interview situation + not able to write a CV in English
Medium - demonstrating a good level of comprehension in answering and asking work related questions in English in an interview situation + able to write a basic CV in English
Advanced - demonstrating a high level of fluency and comprehension in answering and asking work related questions in an interview situation + able to write a detailed CV in English

Also, can you please email me a few suitable dates and time to give you a call this or next week in order of preference? (The chat will be around 30 mins long.)

I look forward to your reply.

Who… We Are?
Google.com (SRE or Site Reliability Engineering) is comprised of hundreds of engineers and technologists worldwide who are generalists in software design, architecture, systems administration, and machines/data center operations.

What… We Do?
The Google.com team is responsible for ensuring new services meet our code and architecture standards during launch. We deploy, maintain, and optimize a subset of services that get huge traffic or generate revenue. Google.com/SRE is also accountable for all mission-critical Google products (as well as the Google site) ensuring availability, performance and capacity.

Why… We Are Needed?
Software development teams rely on us to guide their launch and deployment of new services. Customers, like advertisers and website owners, rely on us for reliability and performance. Users rely on us for availability and quick response. Google relies on us for scalability and maintaining our brand image for uptime and speed, and our engineers ensure software is designed correctly before launching; they perform troubleshooting, reliability planning, and performance optimization to maintain these world-class standards.

When… Are We Needed?
Needed during the development cycle to help developers understand and comply with our architectural guidelines for reliability, speed, and scalability. For ongoing capacity planning to handle Google's rapid traffic growth and global expansion. At the point that a new service (product) is deployed and after services are in production. When ongoing optimization, load balancing, and enhancements are required. When Google services or the .com site require an immediate response (24/7/365) to mobilize engineers to troubleshoot, identify threats, and bring services online.

Thanks
